Edinburgh public ‘back Old Royal High hotel plan’

Controversial plans to transform the old Royal High School into a top hotel have “overwhelming” support from the public, according to the largest polling exercise of its kind ever carried out in Scotland.

The comprehensive survey found that, of the almost 5000 residents quizzed city-wide, more than 90 per cent back the scheme to redevelop the Calton Hill site.

Rufflets country house in St Andrews scooped the top Scottish honour at the AA Hospitality Awards.

A Fife hotel has been named Scottish Hotel of the Year in the AA Hospitality Awards.  Rufflets Hotel in St Andrews took the top award at a ceremony at the Grosvenor Hotel in London on Monday night.

Aberdeen hotel sector revenues ‘still falling’ according to experts

Aberdeen’s hotel sector has suffered double-digit drops in occupancy and revenue for the third month in a row, according to a survey. Business advisers BDO found year-on-year occupancy in the city fell by 13.4% to 68.5% in June.

Rooms yield also fell by 22.1% to £61.32.

BDO said there were “clear signs” that the sector was continuing to be hit by cost-cutting measures in the oil and gas industry.

Macdonald Hotels pressing ahead with £7m St Andrews plan

Macdonald Hotels is pressing ahead with a £7 million investment in the home of golf after winning an appeal for a major project in St Andrews.

The six-storey addition to the Rusacks Hotel will overlook the 18th hole of the town’s world famous golf course.

Macdonald Hotels, founded by Donald Macdonald in 1990, had previously faced opposition from Fife Council’s planning committee over the development amid concerns it could change one of the most famous views in world golf forever.
